Distinguished Engineer

Packet Design is looking for a Distinguished Engineer for Network Analytic Tools to join our Palo Alto development team.

Packet Design, Inc. was founded by former Cisco executives and longtime technology entrepreneurs Judy Estrin and Bill Carrico to address IP network infrastructure problems.  Packet Design, Inc. offers a range of IP network analysis and control solutions that enhance the reliability, efficiency and predictability of IP networks, while retaining the economic and operational benefits that have established IP as the preeminent network for business and the Internet.  Packet Design is located in Palo Alto, California .

Position Description/Responsibilities:

Perform system design and sub-system flow-down. Work with Customers, Marketing, 3rd party software developers, systems engineering and development groups to evaluate product/system goals. Be able to communicate effectively with all levels of contributors from development engineers through upper management. Extremely familiar with IP routing technologies at all levels of implementation, software, middleware, and operating system. Analyze 3rd party software application solutions and provide expert advice on overall system architecture, performance impact and application integration into Packet Design’s Route analytics applications. Develop system requirements that include embedded software, protocols and algorithms. Generate and present technical documentation including white papers, architectural analysis, technical bulletins, feature enhancements and overall technical assessment of routing and traffic analysis for large IP networks. Learn and apply evolving IP and network management technologies and standards.

Knowledge Skills: At least a MS (preferred PhD) in an appropriate engineering discipline and a minimum of 8 years of experience. System engineering in a high tech or advanced technology space, with experience in networking (algorithm and protocol design, routing architecture and design) and network management architecture, design and implementation. Subject matter expert in OSPF, EIGRP, IS-IS, BGP, BGP VPNs, VoIP, IP Multicast, and/or other Communication and Networking protocols. Experience with real-time embedded systems or appliances, real-time UNIX like operating systems (Free BSD, Linux, etc.), and extensive experience with C++ and Object Oriented programming. Experience with network management applications such as configuration management, performance management, fault management. Experience with evolving open standards for networking and network management such as IETF RFCs on routing, VPNs and management, ISO, ITU, and TMF NGOSS. Experience with advanced IP routing topics like multicast VPNs, and IPSLA measurement. Ability to learn new technologies and lead/mentor development teams.
Excellent writing and presentation skills.
